Fun with Ekahau ESS

Part of the Ekahau Certified Survey Engineer (ECSE) course involved just playing around with the application and testing different AP characteristics. The basic map was a football field for ease of measurement and examining antenna patterns.

Some people played around with creating walls and making designs, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

Enjoy!

Ekahau Cube

Steps

First I created a cube diagram using walls with very high attenuation levels. Then I just placed APs on certain channels, and used the “Channel Coverage” visualization.

The scrambled cube was difficult since the coverage doesn’t go all the way into the corners, and neither directional antennas nor moving APs around helped much. This was the best I could manage. White was also a problem since white is used for “no coverage”.

Here is the actual ESS file in case you feel like checking it out in ESS itself. Both the scrambled and solved versions are saved using separate maps.
